Egyptian giants, Zamalek, will be seeking to secure a positive result when they face Congo’s Otoho in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup quarter-finals on Saturday, but they first have to be able to run and breathe through 74 percent humidity and 29 degrees Celsius at Brazzaville’s Alphonse Massamba-Débat Stadium.

The White Knights, the two-time champions, are looking to maintain their fine continental form after securing their spot in the last eight after topping Group D with an impressive unbeaten home record, finishing on 11 points ahead of domestic rivals Masry and Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa.

The Cairo giants scored six goals and conceded only four, boasting the group’s strongest defence.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference on Friday, Zamalek coach Motamed Gamal expressed respect for his opponents but remained confident in his squad's ability to navigate the knockout stages.

"Otoho are a disciplined team who have proven their worth by reaching this stage for the first time. We have studied them well; they are particularly strong at home and rely on their physical intensity," Gamal told reporters.

"Our objective is clear: we want to return to Cairo with a result that reflects our ambitions. Zamalek are always candidates for the title, but we must respect the 90 minutes in Brazzaville first," he added.

When asked about the team's fitness levels following a congested domestic schedule, Gamal noted that the medical staff have worked hard to ensure the squad is at peak condition.

"The players are motivated. We have analysed the opponent's strengths and weaknesses, and we have a clear game plan. It is important that we remain concentrated for the full 90 minutes and manage the game intelligently," he said.

Zamalek are travelling with a full squad, with no injury concerns reported ahead of the departure, as the technical staff have opted to take a robust roster to handle the physical demands of the pitch.

Otoho, meanwhile, progressed as runners-up from Group C, having recorded three wins and three losses in the group stage to finish four points clear of South Africa’s Stellenboschز

The Congolese side, who are making their first appearance in the knockout rounds of a major CAF competition, will rely on their homegrown talents and aim to exploit Zamalek's defensive vulnerabilities.
