Welcoming Eid

Al-Ahram Weekly , Tuesday 17 Mar 2026

ON THE EVENING of 19 March, the sighting of the crescent moon will take place to determine whether Eid Al-Fitr is on Friday or Saturday, bringing an end to the holy month of Ramadan.

Welcoming Eid

The Eid arrives this year amid mounting economic pressures and a tense regional political climate. Households that for years have navigated rising living costs are bracing for pricier food and other items as the US-Israeli war on Iran takes its toll on the global and domestic economy. The government had to increase fuel prices last week due to the exceptional pressures caused by the conflict, which is affecting supply chains and foreign-currency availability, placing additional pressure on the economy.

Despite these challenges, the markets show the familiar signs of preparations for the Eid. Families are rushing to bake or buy kahk and other traditional sweets, according to their individual budgets. They are also keeping up the custom of buying new clothes for the Eid. Some families are taking advantage of the discounts offered by various stores as part of their spring sales.
