Iran threatens to target Gulf energy facilities in retaliation for US-Israeli attack on Pars gas field

Iran’s military said it would target energy infrastructure in the Arab Gulf states following a US-Israeli strike on its facilities at the Pars gas field, the largest known gas reserve in the world, which is shared by Iran and Qatar - state television reported on Wednesday.

The US-Israeli strikes hit parts of the gas facilities located in the South Pars Special Economic Energy Zone in the Iranian city of Asaluyeh, causing a fire, Iranian state television reported on Wednesday.

The South Pars/North Dome mega-field is the largest known gas reserve in the world and supplies about 70 percent of Iran's domestic natural gas.

In response, Iran’s military operational command, Khatam Al-Anbiya, said in a statement that it would “severely strike the source of the aggression and consider targeting the fuel, energy, and gas infrastructure” in the countries from which the attacks were launched.

Israel’s strike against Iran’s South Pars gas field was coordinated with and approved by the Trump administration, the American news website Axios reported, citing two senior Israeli officials.

The report says a US defence official also confirmed the claim.

The offshore gas field in the Persian Gulf, which Iran shares with Qatar, is the largest such facility in the world.

Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesman, Majed Al Ansari, described the targeting of the field — an extension of Qatar’s North Field — as a “dangerous and irresponsible step”.

Since the start of the IS-Israel war on Iran on 28 February, Tehran has launched hundreds of missile and drone attacks on US military bases and what it described as US-linked targets in Arab Gulf countries.

Iran has accused Gulf states of allowing US forces to carry out strikes from their territory. Gulf states have vehemently denied that their territories are being used in the US-Israeli war on Iran. The GCC, the Arab League, and the UNSC have condemned the Iranian retaliatory attacks on Arab Gulf countries.

Iranian state television published a list of what it described as “legitimate targets,” including oil and gas facilities in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, saying they “will be targeted in the coming hours.”

Iran specifically threatened Saudi Arabia’s Samref Refinery and its Jubail Petrochemical Complex, as reported by Associated Press.

It also threatened the UAE’s Al Hasan Gas Field, as well as Qatar’s petrochemical plants and a refinery.

Earlier on Wednesday, Qatar blamed Israel for an attack on an offshore natural gas field it shares with Iran.

"Israel's targeting of facilities linked to Iran's South Pars gas field, which represents an extension of Qatar's North Field, is a dangerous and irresponsible step amid the current military escalation in the region," Qatari Foreign Ministry Spokesman Majed Al-Ansari wrote on X.

He said targeting energy infrastructure is a threat to global energy security, as well as to the people of the region and the environment.

“We call on all parties to exercise restraint, adhere to international law, and work toward de-escalation in a manner that preserves the security and stability of the region,” he added.

Iran shares the massive field with energy giant Qatar and has been developing its side since the late 1990s.

During the 12-day war in June 2025, Israel struck Iranian facilities operating at the field.
