Three US officials told Reuters that the deployment includes the USS Boxer amphibious assault ship, along with its Marine Expeditionary Unit and accompanying naval vessels, in a move aimed at strengthening US operational capacity in the region.
The officials said no decision had been made to send US troops into Iran, but the reinforcements would enhance readiness for potential future operations.
Trump told reporters on Thursday that he was not putting troops "anywhere," but that if he were to do so, he would not tell journalists.
