In a statement on Friday, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the Israeli strikes as a blatant violation of Syrian sovereignty and international law.

Israel carried out overnight strikes on army targets in southern Syria on Friday, hitting a command headquarters and weapons depots in what it described as a response to an attack on Druze citizens in Sweida.

“The Israeli strikes represent a repeated and flagrant breach of the United Nations Charter, which guarantees the territorial integrity and sovereignty of nations,” read the statement.

Cairo warned that Israel's continued provocative actions pose a serious threat to regional security and stability.

The statement demanded the immediate and complete withdrawal of all Israeli forces from occupied Syrian territory, stressing that Israel must comply with relevant international resolutions.

Egypt also renewed its call on the international community, and the UN Security Council in particular, to fulfil its responsibilities by taking swift action to halt Israel's ongoing violations, and to hold Israel accountable under international law.

This latest military action in Syria comes amid escalating violence in Sweida, a predominantly Druze province in the country's south.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that fighting began after mortar fire struck areas held by Druze factions, with shelling subsequently hitting residential neighbourhoods in Sweida city and causing widespread panic among civilians.

Syrian authorities, however, offered a starkly different account. The interior ministry said security forces had dismantled an organized criminal network involved in car theft and drug trafficking. It announced the arrest of nine suspects in connection with the operation.

The recent Israeli strikes come as escalation roiled the Middle East in the wake of the US and Israeli war on Iran.
