Egyptian Premier League side Ahly said on Sunday they understood fans’ anger over the team’s poor results, vowing urgent measures to salvage the season.

Ahly were eliminated from the CAF Champions League quarter-finals on Saturday after a 3-2 home defeat by Esperance de Tunis. They had lost the first leg 1-0 in Tunis, exiting the competition 4-2 on aggregate.

The defeat continues a disappointing run this season, following their exit from the Egypt Cup at the round of 32 and a frustrating third-place standing in the domestic league ahead of the final phase.

The results fall short of expectations, particularly after significant recruitment in the close season.

Fan pressure has mounted for the dismissal of Danish coach Jess Thorup after a string of poor performances, but the club’s management has so far opted for caution, partly due to a substantial release clause in his contract.

“We fully appreciate the sadness and anger of Ahly members and fans due to the team’s results,” the club said in a statement on its official website.

“The football team has received full support in recent periods but has not delivered the anticipated performances domestically and continentally.

“We acknowledge technical and administrative errors. A comprehensive solution is being prepared, but it requires a transitional period and time to be implemented in the best possible way.

“A number of decisions regarding the football sector have already been taken. Some urgent measures will be announced in the coming period, while others will be delayed in the club’s interest to preserve what remains of the current season.”
