Egypt and Jordan have called for a unified Arab position during the upcoming meeting of the Arab League’s (AL) Council of Foreign Ministers, citing what they described as a “dangerous escalation” in the region as the US-Israel war against Iran nears the one-month mark.

In a phone call on Tuesday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi discussed preparations for the Arab League gathering scheduled for late March.

The two ministers stressed the importance of coordinating positions to forge a unified Arab stance in addressing “shared security and political challenges and the dangerous escalation witnessed in the region,” Egypt’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

They reiterated their condemnation of recent Iranian attacks on Jordan and Gulf Arab states, which Iran has launched as part of its retaliatory campaign against Israel and US military bases across the region.

Both ministers reaffirmed an unwavering commitment to Arab national security, the statement pointed out.

They called on Tehran to halt its aggression against Arab states, stressing that respect for international law, state sovereignty, and non-interference remain non-negotiable conditions for regional stability.

Abdelatty and Safadi also reviewed ongoing de-escalation efforts, asserting that diplomacy is the only viable path to restoring security and stability.

The call comes as the US-Israel war on Iran entered its 25th day on Tuesday amid conflicting claims over possible talks.

US President Donald Trump said Washington was holding discussions with Tehran and suggested a broader agreement could be reached, a claim Iranian officials denied, accusing the US of attempting to buy time to deploy more forces to the region and manipulate the market.

On Lebanon, Abdelatty and Safadi voiced support for Beirut’s sovereignty and stability, backing the Lebanese government’s decision to limit weapons to state authority alone.

They also condemned Israeli aggression against Lebanon and expansionist policies in the broader region, according to the statement.

Just three days after the coordinated US-Israel war on Iran began on 28 February, Israel intensified its strikes on Lebanon, devastating towns and infrastructure across the country, particularly in the south, east, and Beirut’s southern suburbs.

Before the conflict, Israel had already violated the November 2024 ceasefire multiple times, killing nearly 500 people, while maintaining occupation of at least five areas in southern Lebanon.

The ongoing Israeli attacks have killed over 1,039 people, injured more than 2,876, and displaced over a million, as ground troops push into the south, raising international fears of a full occupation.

Gaza must not be overlooked

The Egyptian and Jordanian ministers reiterated that international attention on Iran should not come at the expense of Gaza, the statement added.

They also urged renewed efforts to end the worsening humanitarian catastrophe in the territory and called for an immediate halt to Israeli settlement attacks in the West Bank, warning that such measures undermine any prospect for lasting peace. adding that those "flagrant violations of international law require urgent international response."

Both ministers further condemned Israel’s ongoing violations of the rights of Muslim and Christian worshippers in the occupied Palestinian territories, including restrictions on access to holy sites.
