“Unfortunately the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell, I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season,” the 33-year-old forward said in a video posted on his social media accounts.

The video was viewed more than 3 million times on X in the first 30 minutes, was reshared 28,000 times and received over 100,000 interactions.

"I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people would become part of my life. Liverpool is not just a football club. It's a passion. It's a history. It's a spirit.

"I can't explain it in words to anyone not part of this club. We celebrated victory. We won the most important trophies and we fought together through the hardest time in our life," he added.

Salah sent an emotional farewell, thanking the club, his teammates and the fans who “gave him the best time of his life.”

He added that Liverpool will always be his home and concluded by saying “Because of all of you, I will never walk alone.

Despite having a year left on his contract, which was due to expire in 2027, Liverpool said they had reached an agreement with Salah “that will see him close a remarkable nine-year chapter at Anfield.”

Lasting legacy

Signed from AS Roma in 2017, Salah established himself as one of the greatest players in Liverpool’s history, playing a key role in the club’s success, including two Premier League titles, a UEFA Champions League, a FIFA Club World Cup, a UEFA Super Cup, an FA Cup, two League Cups and a Community Shield.

Individually, Mohamed Salah has built a formidable legacy at Liverpool and in the Premier League, winning the Golden Boot four times and being named Player of the Year on three occasions. He is also the league’s all-time leading foreign goalscorer, with 191 goals, among numerous other records.

He was idolised by Liverpool fans, who elevated him to hero status and crowned him “The Egyptian King”. At Anfield, chants rang out in his name: “Mo Salah, Mo Salah, Mo Salah, running down the wing… Salah, la, la, la, laaaaaa… the Egyptian King”.

Last season, he led Liverpool to the league title and became the first player in the competition’s history to complete the treble of Player of the Year, top scorer and top assist provider.

However, his form has dipped this season, amid reduced playing time and performances below his usual standards.

In December, he described his situation as “unacceptable, unfair” after starting his third consecutive match on the bench.

The outburst led to him being left out of the squad for one match.

His relationship with coach Arne Slot has since improved, though uncertainty over his future remains.

The dip in form has fuelled criticism and debate in the media.

This season, Salah has recorded 10 goals and nine assists in 34 appearances across all competitions, a return viewed as solid by many, but below the high standards he has set.

Unknown futur

Salah’s next destination remains unknown, his agent said on X. “We do not know where Mohamed will play next season. This also means that no one else knows.”

In an interview with Egyptian broadcaster ON Sport in May, Mohamed Salah said he had been “very close” to joining the Saudi league had he not signed a new contract with Liverpool, adding that he has maintained good relations with officials there,
