The decision was announced following a meeting on Tuesday between Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Minister of Communications and Information Technology Raafat Hindy, where the two sides discussed ways to enhance cooperation in digital transformation and improve consular services for Egyptians overseas.
The extension is part of broader government efforts to streamline procedures and expand access to digital services, particularly through the Digital Egypt platform, which provides a range of online services for citizens at home and abroad.
The recent extension follows the full implementation of the Mobile Phone Governance System in January 2025, which introduced a mandatory registration process for all mobile devices entering the country.
Under these regulations, devices not officially imported through local agents are subject to a 38.5 percent regulatory fee, covering customs and value added tax (VAT), to combat what officials previously described as a "grey market" that accounted for nearly 95 percent of imports.
While the system originally granted a 90-day grace period for all travelers, the government recently ended general exemptions for most passengers this past January, shifting the focus toward a Buy Local policy to support the burgeoning domestic electronics industry.
