The measures come as heavy thunderstorms, hail, and dust-laden winds are forecast to sweep across the country, prompting coordinated action to limit disruption and protect key infrastructure.
Saeed Helmy, head of the Strategic Management and Local Development Sector at the Ministry of Local Development, said readiness levels have been raised in all governorates, particularly in operations rooms and crisis management units.
Emergency teams have been deployed in streets and on major roads, while water-pumping equipment has been checked to ensure it is fully operational, Helmy said in remarks to Extra News.
He added that round-the-clock monitoring is in place through a system linking governorate operations rooms with the National Emergency Network’s control centre, allowing officials to track developments in real time through field reports and images and respond quickly to drain water or secure key routes.
Authorities have also cleared drainage networks and flood channels, removed obstacles causing water build-up, and ensured suction vehicles and pumps are operating efficiently, with teams stationed in flood-prone areas for rapid response.
Separately, the Ministry of Electricity said it had declared a nationwide state of emergency following warnings from the Egyptian Meteorological Authority.
Spokesman Mansour Abdel-Ghani said a central operations room had been set up and linked to units across electricity companies nationwide, along with the public complaints system to monitor faults and respond quickly.
Technical support, maintenance, and emergency crews have been deployed across all governorates, with senior officials on the ground to oversee rapid response in case of outages.
The ministry has also put contingency plans in place to ensure uninterrupted power supply to vital facilities, particularly hospitals, using mobile generators if needed, Abdel-Ghani said. He added that inspections of the national grid have been completed, and continuous monitoring will remain in place through Wednesday and Thursday.
Thunderstorm clouds have already begun advancing over the far northwestern coasts, including Salloum, bringing rainfall of varying intensity, sometimes heavy, before extending eastward to Matrouh, El-Alamein, the northern coast, the Nile Delta, Greater Cairo, and parts of Upper Egypt, the Egyptian Meteorological Authority stated.
Officials urged citizens to exercise caution, avoid speeding, stay away from electricity poles and overhead lines, and avoid areas where water has accumulated, while reporting any faults or hazards immediately.
Egypt is entering a short period of
unsettled spring weather, with a 48-hour wave expected to bring intermittent rain, sometimes heavy and accompanied by thunder, along with cooler temperatures and strong winds across northern regions, Greater Cairo, and parts of Upper Egypt, before conditions gradually improve toward the weekend.
