Suez Canal traffic unaffected by severe weather: SCA

Navigation through the Suez Canal remained uninterrupted on Wednesday despite severe weather, with 39 vessels transiting in both directions carrying a total net tonnage of 1.6 million tonnes, Suez Canal Authority (SCA) chairman Osama Rabie stated.

Rabie said the steady traffic reflected the canal’s ability to operate under adverse conditions, as Egypt experienced heavy rain, strong winds, and dust storms across several regions.

Rabiee made the remarks while monitoring operations from the main traffic control centre, where he ordered precautionary measures to ensure safe navigation, according to SCA spokesman George Safwat.

He instructed marine units to follow safety protocols, particularly during pilot boarding and routine navigation procedures, while rescue teams and tugboats were placed on heightened alert.

The authority’s crisis management team remains on standby, with increased readiness at hospitals, medical centres, ambulance and firefighting services, and coordination with operations rooms across canal cities.

Passenger crossings between the canal’s two banks, including ferries, bridges, and tunnels, are continuing under normal safety regulations, the SCA said.

The update comes as Egypt implements precautionary measures across transport sectors due to the unstable weather, including flight advisories from EgyptAir and safety measures by rail authorities. Schools and universities have also been suspended nationwide.

Rabiee’s comments follow signs of a recovery in canal traffic after months of disruption to global shipping routes. He said last month that revenues rose 24.5 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2025, while vessel traffic increased about 9 percent, supported by incentives aimed at encouraging ships to return.
