The results place Egyptian universities among the world’s top 50 in veterinary medicine and petroleum engineering, and within the top 100 in pharmacy, anatomy and physiology, and dentistry, reflecting what officials described as sustained improvements in research output and academic reputation.
The QS rankings, which assessed 1,900 institutions across more than 100 countries, included Egyptian universities in 42 out of 55 evaluated academic fields, underscoring a broadening disciplinary presence.
Higher Education Minister Abdelaziz Konsowa said the results highlight “continuous efforts to improve the academic reputation of Egyptian universities and the quality of scientific research,” noting that institutions had both maintained strong positions in established fields and entered new subject areas for the first time.
The number of Egyptian universities featured in the rankings rose to 21 in 2026 from 19 in 2025, he added.
Cairo University ranked 46th globally in petroleum engineering, while Zagazig University placed 45th in veterinary medicine. Al-Azhar University ranked 36th worldwide in theology, divinity, and religious studies.
In pharmacy, Cairo University ranked 53rd globally, placing it among the top 100 worldwide, while Egyptian universities also featured prominently in veterinary medicine, anatomy and physiology, and dentistry.
Several universities recorded placements across multiple disciplines. Cairo, Alexandria, and Mansoura universities were ranked in dentistry, while Alexandria University and the American University in Cairo were ranked in petroleum engineering.
The rankings also showed a rise in the number of Egyptian universities included in key scientific disciplines. Institutions listed in computer science increased from 10 to 13, while those in agriculture rose from 8 to 13, and those in pharmacy from 8 to 12. Gains were also recorded in mathematics, chemistry, environmental sciences, education, and linguistics.
In computer science and information technology, Cairo University ranked 136th globally among Egyptian institutions, followed by Ain Shams University in the 351–400 band. In engineering and technology, Cairo ranked 141st, with Ain Shams and Alexandria also placing within the top 300.
In medicine, 12 Egyptian universities were included, led by Cairo University at 164th globally, followed by Ain Shams and Alexandria in higher ranking bands.
QS rankings are based on four key indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations, and international research collaboration, ministry spokesperson Adel Abdel-Ghaffar said.
He added that the expansion in rankings is due to increased research funding, stronger international partnerships, and wider access to scientific resources, including through the Egyptian Knowledge Bank, supporting Egypt’s broader push to enhance higher education under its Vision 2030 strategy.
The QS World University Rankings are among the most widely cited global university rankings, published annually by UK-based higher education analytics firm Quacquarelli Symonds.
In January, 83 Egyptian institutions were listed in the 2026 Webometrics Ranking, up from 76 in 2022, reflecting steady gains in digital presence and research visibility. Ten universities placed among the world’s top 1,000, led by Cairo University (405th), followed by Alexandria and Ain Shams universities.
The ranking is produced by the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group affiliated with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), Spain’s largest public research institution.
Webometrics covers nearly 32,000 universities and higher education institutes worldwide and is published twice annually, in January and July.
Webometrics places particular emphasis on universities’ web performance and digital footprint, measuring factors such as the volume and quality of online academic content, citation impact, research openness, and institutional visibility on the internet.
The methodology reflects the growing role of digital transformation and open-access research in global higher education competitiveness.
