The Cairo Metro (Lines 1, 2, and 3):

- The ticket price for up to 9 stations will increase to 10 Egyptian pounds from 8.
- The ticket price for up to 16 stations will increase to 12 Egyptian pounds from 10.
- The ticket price for up to 23 stations will remain unchanged at 15 Egyptian pounds.
- The ticket price for more than 23 stations up to 39 stations will remain unchanged at 20 Egyptian pounds.

The ministry encouraged all citizens, especially students and employees in the public and private sectors, to purchase train and metro passes, which offer significant discounts on their various journeys across the railway and the three metro lines.

The Ministry of Transport explained in its statement that the reasons for this adjustment in train ticket prices and some metro fares are as follows:

The need to cover operating expenses, as the Egyptian National Railways and the National Authority for Tunnels face significant financial challenges due to the rise in global petroleum product prices, which are imported using hard currency, as well as the repeated increases in electricity prices over the past few years. This has placed a considerable financial burden on both authorities, especially given the fixed ticket prices, said the ministry.

The substantial financial burden of maintaining the current fleet of railway and metro trains due to the increased cost of spare parts, as well as the ongoing efficiency improvements and development work on several existing railway lines.

The periodic increase in salaries for employees of both authorities, in line with the practices of other government employees, reflects the Egyptian state's commitment to providing a decent standard of living for all public sector employees.

The ministry also stated that it has been working to increase investment in all assets and properties of the Egyptian National Railways and the National Authority for Tunnels to boost their resources. These measures will contribute to ensuring the sustainability of high-quality services for the public, it added.

Earlier in March, Egypt's Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources raised fuel prices by 14 to 30 percent, driven by global energy market volatility.

New prices include 95-octane at EGP 24, 92-octane at EGP 22.25, 80-octane at EGP 20.75, and diesel at EGP 20.5 per litre.
