In a statement, the PPS said deaths among prisoners are a result of systematic torture, starvation, medical neglect, sexual assaults, and a series of other abuses, including deprivation, confiscation, humiliation, and inhumane detention conditions that violate human dignity.

The society noted that many of the Gaza detainees who died in prison remain subject to enforced disappearance, while dozens were executed in the field. Photos of the prisoners' bodies and remains handed over after the ceasefire provided evidence of systematic extrajudicial killings.

The statement described this period as the deadliest in the history of the Palestinian prisoners' movement, noting that the total number of confirmed prisoner deaths since 1967 has reached 326.

The number of deceased prisoners whose bodies are known has risen to 97, including 86 who died since the start of the Israeli genocidal war on Gaza on 7 October 2023.

On Saturday,  the PPS and the Palestinian Prisoners and Freed Prisoners Affairs Authority reported the death of the injured Palestinian detainee Marwan Fathi Harzallah in the Israeli Megiddo prison.

In a joint statement, the two organizations said Harzallah was detained on 8 January 2026 and remained imprisoned on charges of what the Israeli occupation claims as “incitement.”

He had previously been shot by Israeli forces in 1995, resulting in the amputation of one of his legs. Harzallah also had a son, Tahrir Harzallah, who is currently held under administrative detention.
