In a statement, Fahmy also thanked member states of the regional organization for their unanimous approval of a recommendation to the 35th Ordinary Session of the Arab Summit, scheduled to be held in Saudi Arabia, to support his nomination for a five-year term starting 1 July 2026.

He said he carries this responsibility with seriousness and awareness, given the unprecedented challenges facing the region, including violations of international law, attacks on Arab countries and their security, the continued occupation of Arab lands, and efforts that threaten the region’s stability.

Fahmy described the nomination as a precious trust, affirming his commitment to upholding it through the League of Arab States and consulting with its members to address challenges and work towards a more secure, stable, and prosperous Arab future.

He also pledged to develop shared visions and capabilities, strengthen institutions, support development, and promote common interests among Arab countries.

Nabil Fahmy, who was born on 5 January 1951, served as Egypt’s minister of foreign affairs from 14 July 2013, in the cabinet of Hazem El-Beblawi and continued in the government of Ibrahim Mahlab, formed on 26 February 2014.

He was the first dean of the School of Public Affairs at the American University in Cairo from August 2009 to July 2013 and served as Egypt’s ambassador to the United States from 1999 to 2008.

He is the son of Ismail Fahmy, a former Egyptian foreign minister.
