AUC Tahrir CultureFest returns to explore Cairo’s future through art and AI

Ahram Online , Sunday 29 Mar 2026

The American University in Cairo’s Tahrir campus presents the 3rd edition of CultureFest (2–4 April 2026), an event that blends public discussions, art exhibitions, performances, and technology-focused conversations.

AUC CultFest

The three-day event invites visitors to imagine what Cairo’s future might look like as tradition meets rapidly evolving digital innovation.

The festival is open to the public and designed as a gathering space for scholars, artists, entrepreneurs, and residents of the city alike.

Under the theme "Future C-AI-RO," this year’s programme explores the intersections of artificial intelligence, creativity, urban life, and cultural heritage, while asking how new technologies are already reshaping everyday life, education, and storytelling in Egypt.

Since its launch in 2024, the annual CultureFest has positioned itself as a platform for dialogue about Cairo’s cultural identity and global connections. The festival brings together members of the AUC community alongside writers, artists, academics, and public figures for a programme that mixes intellectual discussion with artistic experimentation and family-friendly activities.

Opening night: Art, history, and spectacle

The festival opens on Thursday evening, 2 April, with a special reception in the Fountain Area of the Tahrir campus. The launch will introduce a set of exhibitions that collectively explore the shifting relationship between human identity, urban space, and artificial intelligence.

Among them is Future C-AI-RO, which reflects on the technological transformation of the Egyptian capital, alongside Anah: Conversations with AI, an exploration of human interaction with machine intelligence. Other exhibitions, including those titled: I Don’t Know Who I Am Anymore and Time Will Tell, examine questions of identity and memory in an era shaped by digital culture and rapid urban change.

Later in the evening, a projection mapping show titled Whispers of the Walls will illuminate the historic facades of the campus buildings, turning them into a visual narrative of the university’s past and Cairo’s evolving identity. The opening celebrations will conclude with a live concert organized by AUC’s Student Union.

Conversations about AI and society

From 3–4 April, the festival’s programme will feature panel discussions and workshops on the growing influence of artificial intelligence in different sectors of society.

One session, titled Behind the Screen: How AI Is Changing What We Read, Watch, and Believe, will explore how emerging technologies are transforming journalism, television production, and storytelling. Speakers from Egyptian media and academia will discuss the opportunities AI offers and the ethical questions it raises around credibility, misinformation, and public trust.

Another panel, Higher Ed in the Age of AI, will focus on how universities are adapting their teaching methods and curricula to prepare students for an increasingly automated and data-driven future. The discussion will bring together educators and researchers examining how higher education institutions in Egypt and the wider region are responding to these changes.

Economic perspectives will also feature prominently. In the session AI and the Economy: Opportunities and Implications, experts from academia and industry will address how generative AI and large language models may reshape labour markets, productivity, and digital governance frameworks in Egypt.

Beyond these debates, visitors will also encounter the ways technology is being used to reinterpret the distant past. In a talk titled Digital Resurrection: How Medical Imaging Is Transforming Egyptology, radiologist Sahar Saleem will present how CT scanning technologies allow researchers to reconstruct the faces and lives of ancient Egyptian figures.

Imagining Cairo’s future

The festival will also invite visitors to think creatively about the city itself.

An interactive workshop titled Scenario Thinking: The Future of Cairo will explore possible futures for the Egyptian capital, taking into account issues such as population growth, climate challenges, and technological transformation.

A major highlight of this year’s edition is the launch of TEDx AUC Tahrir Square, which will take place under the theme Human Forward. Bringing together speakers from architecture, business, psychology, and the creative arts, the event will examine how human agency, creativity, and curiosity can remain central in an increasingly automated world.

Music, art, and public space

Alongside its talks and debates, CultureFest places strong emphasis on artistic expression and public engagement. Visitors can attend concerts ranging from orchestral-electronic fusion music by composer Hisham Kharma to performances exploring the relationship between artificial intelligence and musical composition.

Visual art and digital creativity will also feature prominently, including a live pixel-art performance inspired by Cairo’s urban landscape, and screenings from the ANIMATEX 2026 animation programme.

The campus itself will become an open cultural space with a book fair by AUC Press, a bazaar showcasing local crafts, robotics and AI demonstrations in an Innovation Discovery Zone, and a children’s programme featuring storytelling sessions, puppet shows, and interactive theatre.

By combining intellectual debate, creative experimentation, and public celebration, the festival aims to create a space where Cairo’s past and future can be explored side by side.

For three days, AUC’s downtown campus will effectively become a microcosm of the city itself: a place where heritage, creativity, and technology intersect, offering a glimpse into what the next chapter of Cairo might look like.
