Egypt braces for peak of unstable weather with more rain and dust storms midweek

A spell of unstable weather is set to intensify across Egypt on Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing rain of varying intensity, strong winds, and reduced visibility to northern regions, including Cairo, the Delta, and canal cities, the meteorological authority said.

The midweek conditions mark the most active phase of a broader six-day weather pattern, with forecasters warning that the combination of rainfall and wind-driven dust could briefly disrupt daily activity, particularly on highways and in open areas.

Rain is expected to begin spreading across the Mediterranean coast and northern Delta on Tuesday, then extend inland, with light to moderate showers reaching Greater Cairo, Sinai, and parts of northern Upper Egypt at intervals. Winds will also pick up nationwide, raising the likelihood of blowing sand and dust in exposed areas.

Conditions are forecast to peak on Wednesday, when continued rainfall across the north will coincide with stronger, more persistent winds, potentially reducing horizontal visibility, especially outside urban centres.

Temperatures are expected to remain relatively mild despite the instability.

In Greater Cairo, highs are forecast to reach around 26°C on Tuesday and Wednesday, with lows between 13–15°C. Across the northern coast and Delta, daytime temperatures will range from 22–25°C, while in Upper Egypt, highs are expected to reach 29–33°C, particularly in the south.

Overall, rainfall is expected to be moderate along the northern coast and the Delta, with occasional heavier bursts in localized areas, while inland regions, including Cairo, are likely to see lighter, intermittent showers.

By Thursday, conditions are forecast to gradually ease, although some rain may persist in northern areas alongside continued wind activity.

Temperatures will remain steady, with Cairo recording highs around 25–26°C and cooler nights near 12°C.

The system is expected to weaken further by Friday, with rainfall largely subsiding and winds becoming the main feature, particularly in South Sinai and southern regions, while temperatures hold in the mid-20s in the north and approach 30°C in Upper Egypt.

The current weather pattern reflects a typical spring transition period in Egypt, where fluctuations between mild warmth and brief instability are common, often driven by shifting air masses and active wind systems.

The forecast builds on a turbulent end to last week, when unstable weather intensified across several governorates.

By Thursday, rainfall had already begun to ease compared with the previous day, although thunderstorms and strong winds persisted across multiple regions, leaving two people dead and two others injured.

The disruption peaked early Sunday, when heavy rain swept across Greater Cairo, the Suez Canal cities, parts of Upper Egypt, the Gulf of Suez and Sinai, triggering widespread traffic congestion and school closures in Cairo, Giza and Qalyubia.

Authorities postponed exams and urged caution as strong winds accompanied the downpour, while railway services reported limited delays due to weather conditions.
