Egyptian pound weakens towards EGP 55 to the dollar at Tuesday COB

The Egyptian pound weakened further on Tuesday, with the US dollar approaching EGP 55 at some banks, as regional conflict continued to weigh on the currency, according to data from several banks at the close of business (COB) on Tuesday.

The dollar traded at a high of EGP 54.8 for buying and EGP 54.9 for selling at Suez Canal Bank and National Bank of Kuwait (NBK) at COB.

This compares with Monday’s top levels of about EGP 54.5 for buying and EGP 54.6 for selling at lenders including Commercial International Bank (CIB), Suez Canal Bank, and Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait.

Most other banks quoted narrower ranges of about EGP 54.5 to EGP 54.53 for buying and around EGP 54.6 for selling, indicating broadly aligned pricing across the banking system.

At the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE), the dollar traded at EGP 54.5 for buying and EGP 54.66 for selling, broadly unchanged from Monday’s levels, with only marginal movement.

The pound remains significantly weaker than before the start of the US-Israeli war on Iran on 28 February. The currency has depreciated by about EGP 6.65, or roughly 13.9 percent, from around EGP 47.9 at the end of February.

Other currencies

The euro rose to EGP 62.67 for buying and EGP 62.8 for selling on Tuesday, up from EGP 62.5 and EGP 62.7 on Monday. It has gained about EGP 6.2 against the pound since before the conflict.

Sterling traded at EGP 72.18 for buying and EGP 72.37 for selling, up from EGP 72.11 and EGP 72.32 on Monday, marking an increase of roughly EGP 7.4 from pre-conflict levels.

Gulf currencies were broadly unchanged on the day. The Saudi riyal traded between EGP 14.52 and EGP 14.56, while the UAE dirham stood between EGP 14.83 and EGP 14.88, and the Qatari riyal between EGP 14.94 and EGP 15.

The Kuwaiti dinar rose slightly to between EGP 177.6 and EGP 178.11, up from EGP 177.55 and EGP 178.07 on Monday.

The Bahraini dinar traded at EGP 144.61 to EGP 145, compared with EGP 144.28 to EGP 144.84 a day earlier, while the Omani riyal stood between EGP 141.61 and EGP 141.9. The Jordanian dinar traded between EGP 76.79 and EGP 77.2.

CBE data shows that these currencies have appreciated by between about EGP 1.76 and EGP 20.98 against the pound since the start of the conflict.
