Middle East Studies Programme Conference Room
“Gender, Law and Social Change in the Gulf: Reflections from the Field” a public lecture by Sumaiya Al-Wahaibi, postdoctoral researcher on the Gulf Feminisms Project at the University of Copenhagen. She was previously a Visiting Scholar at New York University Abu Dhabi and has worked with several UN agencies, including UNFPA, UNICEF, and UNESCO Headquarters. This lecture brings you inside Oman’s sharia courts, into hearing rooms where women argued their cases in real time, where families broke down, and where the distance between law on paper and law in practice became viscerally clear.

Wed 8, 6.30pm (Free Session): A meeting with Lebanese Francophone author Sharif Majdalani about his literary works, as part of the Francophonie Month celebrations. The meeting will focus on his literary world, coinciding with the publication of his latest novel, The Name of Kings, which has been shortlisted for the 2025 Prix Goncourt and also nominated for the Prix Goncourt Orient in the same year. This meeting offers a unique opportunity to discover one of the most prominent voices in contemporary Francophone literature and engage in a lively dialogue about literary creativity. The meeting will be moderated by Dalia Shams, a journalist with Al-Ahram Hebdo newspaper. The meeting will be in French.

AUC Tahrir Square (Multiple Venues)
Thurs 2 – Sat 4, 2pm –11pm: Get ready to imagine Cairo’s future at the third edition of AUC Tahrir 2026 CultureFest. Explore how tradition and technology will shape the city’s next era, diving into topics like AI, tech, innovation, business, creativity and art. Open to the public, the three-day cultural festival will offer a vibrant array of activities, including panel discussions, TEDx AUC Tahrir Square talk, under the theme “Human Forward,” exhibitions, downtown excursions, live performances, a book fair, a bazaar and a dedicated children’s programme. The AUC Tahrir CultureFest is an annual celebration of Cairo’s vibrant cultural, artistic and intellectual heritage and its global significance. Since its Launch in 2024, the festival has attracted thousands of visitors, bringing together diverse communities, artists, academics and thought leaders through a dynamic program that highlights Cairo’s rich history, innovation and creativity as a city and cultural hub.
