Egypt FM discusses Cairo’s regional de-escalation efforts in talks with Russian Security Council chief

Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty affirmed on Thursday Egypt’s intensive diplomatic efforts to contain regional escalation, stressing that the diplomatic track is the best option to avoid the expansion of the conflict, during a meeting with Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu in Moscow.

According to the Egyptian foreign ministry, the meeting took place during Abdelatty’s official visit to Russia, where he met earlier with President Vladimir Putin.

During the meeting, both sides discussed the ongoing escalation in the region, where the Egyptian FM reviewed the outcomes of the recent quadrilateral ministerial meeting held in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, affirming Egypt’s continued efforts to support security and stability in the region.

They also discussed developments in the Horn of Africa, where Abdelatty stressed support for regional and international efforts aimed at achieving stability in Somalia and the Horn of Africa region.

The Egyptian FM emphasized that governance of the Red Sea remains an inherent and exclusive responsibility of its littoral states, as they are primarily responsible for maintaining its security and stability.

The talks also addressed water security, where Abdelatty stressed the importance of cooperation in accordance with international law to safeguard the interests of all Nile Basin countries, while rejecting unilateral measures that violate international law in the Eastern Nile Basin.

They also discussed developments in Libya, where Egypt’s top diplomat reaffirmed Cairo’s firm position in support of Libya’s unity and stability.

He stressed the importance of unifying national institutions and reaching a comprehensive political settlement through a Libyan-led process that paves the way for simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections at the earliest opportunity.

During the meeting, Abdelatty expressed appreciation for the strategic partnership between the two countries, voicing pride in the notable development witnessed in Egyptian-Russian relations recently across various fields.

He also looked forward to continuing joint efforts to elevate bilateral cooperation in a way that reflects the level of the comprehensive strategic partnership and achieves mutual benefit.

The Egyptian FM further praised the outcomes of Shoigu’s visit to Cairo in November, emphasizing the importance of further strengthening cooperation across various fields in support of both countries’ national security priorities and in contributing to regional and international peace and security.
