Egypt urges halt to Israeli attacks on Lebanon amid US–Iran truce

Egypt said on Wednesday that Israel should immediately stop its ongoing attacks on Lebanon following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a two-week ceasefire in the US–Israeli war on Iran, stressing that the situation in Lebanon remains fragile, according to a statement from the Egyptian foreign ministry.

The statement reflects growing concern in Cairo that the temporary ceasefire, aimed at preventing a wider regional conflict, must lead to de-escalation on all active fronts, including Lebanon.

It comes as Israel renewed its strikes on Lebanon on Wednesday, killing at least eight people and injuring 22 others, according to the Lebanese health ministry.

Egypt said an immediate cessation of Israeli strikes is necessary to preserve Lebanon’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 1701, and to enable the safe and dignified return of displaced people.

Cairo also reaffirmed its full support and solidarity with Lebanon, both its government and people, during what it described as a “critical phase” aimed at helping the country overcome ongoing challenges and strengthen security and stability.

Israel said on Wednesday that the US–Iran two-week ceasefire does not extend to Lebanon, contradicting mediators’ assertions that the agreement applies across all fronts.

Pakistan’s prime minister, who helped broker the deal, said the ceasefire covers “everywhere, including Lebanon,” several media reported, framing the agreement as a comprehensive pause in hostilities.

Israel, however, rejected that interpretation. “The two-week ceasefire does not apply to Lebanon,” a statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese resistance group Hezbollah has paused its attacks on Israel following the ceasefire announcement, suggesting compliance on the ground.
