In his meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani in Baghdad, Abdelatty briefed the Iraqi prime minister on Egypt's efforts to de-escalate the conflict in collaboration with regional and international partners.
He also highlighted the impetus Egypt has given to negotiations to consolidate the recent ceasefire between the US and Iran and pave the way for a broader understanding between them.
Furthermore, Abdelatty conveyed a verbal message from President Abdel-Fattaeh El-Sisi to Al-Sudani.
He reiterated Cairo’s firm rejection of the attacks targeting Arab states and the ongoing Israeli attacks on Lebanon, stressing that Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected.
Moreover, Abdelatty stressed the need for greater solidarity among Arab states. He emphasized that the relations between these countries should be governed by mutual respect, non-interference in domestic affairs, and peaceful resolution of disputes.
In return, Al-Sudani commended Abdelatty for being the first Arab and foreign minister to visit Iraq since the outbreak of the US-Israeli war on Iran.
He praised the strong relations between Egypt and Iraq, stressing his country's aspiration to enhance cooperation with Egypt.
Talks with the Iraqi foreign minister
Abdelatty also met with Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein. The meeting focused on the regional situation and ways to contain escalation following the temporary ceasefire.
The two ministers reviewed efforts to build on the truce to advance de-escalation, prioritize diplomacy and negotiations, and contain the dangerous situation in the region.
Abdelatty reaffirmed the depth of historic ties between Egypt and Iraq and Cairo’s commitment to advancing cooperation across various sectors.
He also reviewed Egypt’s intensive efforts in recent weeks to de-escalate the conflict in coordination with regional partners, notably Pakistan.
Moreover, the Egyptian foreign minister reiterated Egypt’s condemnation of what he described as “unjustified attacks” targeting Gulf states, Iraq, and Jordan.
He further affirmed Cairo’s full solidarity with Arab countries in confronting threats to their security, sovereignty, and stability.
The Egyptian foreign minister also emphasized the importance of considering Arab countries’ security in the ongoing negotiations between Iran and the United States.
He urged adherence to principles of good neighbourliness, respect for sovereignty, and non-interference in domestic affairs, including in relations between Iraq and neighbouring Gulf states.
He also called for resolving disputes through peaceful means.
Additionally, Abdelatty warned of the ramifications of Israel's military attacks on Lebanon. He noted that these attacks undermine regional and international efforts to stabilize the region.
In conclusion, the two sides agreed to continue consultations on enhancing ties between Egypt and Iraq and de-escalating the conflict.
They stressed that diplomatic solutions remain the only viable path to resolving conflicts and preventing further instability.
