Iranian media said on Saturday that negotiations between Tehran and Washington aimed at ending the US-Israeli war on Iran have begun in Islamabad, though the format of the talks remains unclear.

The Fars and Tasnim news agencies said “it was decided to begin negotiations” following “progress made during preliminary talks and the reduction of attacks by the Zionist regime in southern Beirut in Lebanon,” referring to Israel.

Other Iranian outlets, including Mehr and ISNA, also reported that talks had started after the office of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the peace discussions had “commenced.”

Al Jazeera, citing sources close to the mediation process, said Iranian and US delegations were meeting face-to-face, with Pakistani mediators present in the negotiating room.

Reuters reported separately, citing a Pakistani source, that the talks were underway in Islamabad.

According to the reports, the three-way engagement includes US Vice President JD Vance, special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, and senior adviser Jared Kushner; Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf; and Pakistan’s army chief Asim Munir.

In previous US-Iran negotiations, including indirect nuclear talks in Oman in the days before Washington and Tel Aviv launched a war on Tehran on 28 February, mediators typically shuttled between the two sides to relay proposals and messages rather than holding direct meetings.
