Egypt pushes to expand int’l development partnerships in Washington meetings

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has underscored that Egypt seeks to strengthen international development partnerships and enhance the investment climate to support economic stability and growth amid global headwinds.

Abdelatty made his remarks during a series of high-level meetings held on Tuesday on the sidelines of the Spring Meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund in Washington.

In a meeting with a delegation from the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, the foreign minister stressed the importance of expanding bilateral cooperation, particularly in renewable energy, infrastructure, and water resource management, in line with Egypt’s national priorities.

He also highlighted the value of technical expertise exchange to support sustainable development, according to a foreign ministry statement.

Both sides reviewed the agency’s role in supporting development projects in Egypt, including programs aimed at improving services and fostering economic and social development.

The Italian delegation reaffirmed its commitment to further strengthening cooperation in the coming period.

In a separate meeting, Abdelatty held talks with Tsutomu Yamamoto, managing director of the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency, in the presence of Planning and Economic Development Minister Ahmed Rostom and Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Hussein Eissa.

The foreign minister praised MIGA’s role in supporting Egypt’s investment environment, noting that its guarantees have helped boost investor confidence, particularly in strategic sectors such as renewable energy and banking.

He emphasized that empowering the private sector remains a top government priority as the main driver of economic growth, the statement added.

Abdelatty outlined ongoing efforts to create a more attractive investment climate through a comprehensive package of reforms, including tax and customs incentives, digital transformation to streamline procedures, and legislative upgrades to ensure transparency and fair competition.

He also expressed Egypt’s interest in expanding cooperation with MIGA and increasing the portfolio of joint projects, describing the partnership as a key tool for attracting foreign investment and mobilizing financing.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continuing economic reforms aimed at achieving sustainable and inclusive growth, improving the efficiency of financial and economic resource management, and strengthening overall economic stability.

He further highlighted the government’s adherence to the state ownership policy document and its focus on increasing private sector participation, pointing to positive macroeconomic indicators prior to the current global crisis.

Addressing regional developments, Abdelatty noted the economic repercussions of ongoing military escalation, stressing that Egypt’s response has focused on securing energy supplies, strengthening food security, and maintaining fiscal discipline, alongside proactive measures to mitigate the impact of external shocks.

For his part, Yamamoto commended Egypt’s cooperation with MIGA across sectors, including renewable energy, manufacturing, infrastructure, and financial services, expressing the agency’s keenness to deepen collaboration in support of Egypt’s investment landscape.
