Nazli Madkour

Hymn of the Earth brings together a carefully curated selection of works spanning over 45 years of artistic production, forming what can be described as a complete visual autobiography that traces the evolution of Madkour’s distinctive artistic language.

Through this expansive body of work, the artist narrates a sustained creative journey deeply rooted in the concept of “the earth” as both her primary source of inspiration and the central axis of her aesthetic and intellectual transformations.

From the outset, Madkour aligned herself with the richness and diversity of the Egyptian landscape, from oases and deserts to Upper Egypt and the rural countryside.

Across her artistic explorations, she has employed a wide array of materials and techniques, producing visual compositions that examine the relationship between human beings, place, and identity, ultimately arriving at abstraction itself, shaped by multiple phases of transformation.

In his introduction to the exhibition, Dr Mostafa El-Razzaz underscores the rarity of such a comprehensive showcase, noting that Madkour’s oeuvre is marked by both richness and a sustained experimental impulse.

This is evident not only in her thematic explorations and formal innovations, but also in the intellectual and artistic concerns she has engaged, particularly those related to women, as well as her work in artists’ books and her collaborations with literary and philosophical texts. Her practice extends across diverse surfaces, including canvas, paper, papyrus, and other materials.

El-Razzaz further observes that audiences will encounter Madkour’s remarkable ability to adapt her painterly sensibility, shaped by both technical mastery and cultural depth, to the specific nature of each medium.

Her work demonstrates a sophisticated synthesis between geometric structuring and organic, fluid relationships of colour and compositional rhythm, achieving a high degree of harmony and conviction. This, he suggests, reflects a deeply informed understanding of design and a confident navigation of shifting visual variables within a distinctive artistic vocabulary.

A careful viewing of the exhibition reveals the continuity of Madkour’s creative identity across her varied phases. Each exhibition she has presented introduces a new structural and conceptual dimension, yet remains organically connected to the broader contours of her stylistic approach and her methodology in composition and colour.

It is worth noting that Nazli Madkour has held over 40 solo exhibitions in Egypt and abroad, in addition to participating in numerous prestigious international group shows. Her works are included in major artistic and cultural collections both locally and internationally.

Widely regarded as a leading figure in contemporary Egyptian art, she brings together an academic background in economics and political science with independent artistic study, forging a singular and distinguished creative path.

In recognition of her contributions, Madkour was awarded the State Merit Award in the Arts in 2025 and was honoured by Mrs Entissar El-Sisi during the 2026 celebration “Egyptian Women: Icons of Success,” organized by the National Council for Women on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
