Abdelatty met Marco Rubio on Tuesday during his visit to Washington, where both sides reviewed ways to advance the long-standing strategic partnership between Egypt and the United States.
The two ministers praised the depth of relations spanning more than four decades, highlighting their role in promoting mutual interests and supporting regional security and stability, according to a foreign ministry statement.
They also expressed their aspiration to further develop bilateral ties across various sectors.
On the economic front, Abdelatty stressed the importance of enhancing trade and investment cooperation, outlining opportunities for increased US investments in Egypt.
He also expressed hope for convening the second session of the joint economic commission and hosting the second edition of the Egypt-US Economic Forum in Cairo in June 2026, in coordination with the US Chamber of Commerce, to boost economic partnerships and attract more American companies.
Regional developments featured prominently in the discussions, with the two sides addressing ongoing tensions and the trajectory of negotiations between the United States and Iran.
The US side briefed Egypt on the latest developments in this regard, the statement pointed out.
The talks also covered the Palestinian issue, particularly the situation in Gaza and efforts to advance the second phase of a US-backed plan, as well as continued Israeli violations in the West Bank.
On Sudan, Abdelatty stressed the importance of preserving the country’s unity and territorial integrity, supporting national institutions, and launching an inclusive Sudanese-led political process to end the conflict.
Both sides underscored the need for a humanitarian truce as a step towards a sustainable ceasefire and improved humanitarian access.
Discussions also addressed the situation in Lebanon amid ongoing Israeli escalation, with Abdelatty emphasizing the need to respect Lebanese sovereignty, support state institutions, particularly the army, and reach a ceasefire to enable diplomatic efforts.
The meeting further touched on developments in the Horn of Africa, where Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s position on respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of regional states, particularly Somalia and Eritrea, as a basis for stability.
On water security, the Egyptian foreign minister reiterated that the Nile River is an existential issue for Egypt, stressing the country’s commitment to cooperation based on international law while rejecting unilateral measures on transboundary rivers.
For his part, Rubio praised the strategic partnership between Egypt and the United States and commended Cairo’s efforts in supporting regional stability.
Both sides agreed to maintain close coordination and consultations on regional and international issues of mutual concern.
