The government has completed an initial draft of a unified personal status law for Christian citizens, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said on Thursday, as officials reviewed a package of family-related legislation at a cabinet meeting.
The discussions, held in line with directives from President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, focused on preparing draft laws governing personal status for both Muslims and Christians for submission to parliament. A proposed Family Support Fund law is also being finalized for referral to the legislature.
Minister of Justice Mahmoud El-Sherif said the Christian personal status draft has reached an advanced stage but will still undergo consultations with representatives of different Christian denominations before being submitted to the cabinet and then to the House of Representatives.
He added that the government has also revised a previously withdrawn draft of the Muslim personal status law. A specialized committee reworked the bill to address earlier objections and build a broader consensus before reintroducing it.
Madbouly said the government aims to refer the package of personal status legislation to parliament promptly, as part of efforts to regulate family affairs, protect rights, and meet public demand for legal reform.
