A snap shot of Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty speaking In an interview with CBS News.
In an interview with CBS News that aired on Thursday, Abdelatty highlighted Egypt's active mediation in conflicts in Gaza and Sudan and its efforts to secure navigation in the Red Sea.
He also stated that he emphasized Egypt's efforts to reach a peaceful settlement to the conflict between the US and Iran in discussions he held with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
He described the recent high-level dialogue between Washington and Tehran as the "highest level of dialogue in decades," stressing that remaining issues between the two nations are "bridgeable".
"We believe there is an opportunity, and we need to push for this available window of opportunity to reach compromises," Abdelatty stated.
Egypt, he noted, will participate in a "Quad" meeting on Friday in Antalya, Turkey, alongside Pakistan, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia to coordinate efforts to resume direct talks between the US and Iran.
Addressing the "deadlock" in Gaza, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to US President Donald Trump’s 20-point peace plan. He revealed that a Hamas delegation has visited Cairo three times in recent weeks to discuss a proposal for a phased decommissioning of arms in Gaza, beginning with heavy weaponry, that also includes Israeli withdrawal from the lands it currently occupies in the strip (approximately 51 percent of Gaza).
The Egyptian FM warned that international focus on Iran should not divert attention from the situation in the West Bank, citing "imagination-defying" violence from settlers and continued land confiscation.
Regarding threats to international shipping in the Red Sea, Abdelatty emphasized that freedom of navigation is a principle all countries must respect.
He noted that normal maritime traffic through the Bab Al-Mandab Strait has been restored since a ceasefire between the US and the Houthis months ago.
"Egypt has the Suez Canal, and this is very crucial to international trade," Abdelatty said, adding that the Council of Arab and African States bordering the Red Sea is taking responsibility for securing the waterway.
Moreover, the Egyptian FM spoke briefly of the ongoing discussions on the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, emphasizing that de-escalation across all regional fronts remains Egypt’s primary diplomatic objective.
