Israel killed more than 38,000 women and girls during its genocidal war on Gaza, averaging at least 47 per day, the United Nations (UN) estimated on Friday, accounting for more than half of the 72,000 deaths recorded by the Palestinian health ministry.

“Between October 2023 and December 2025, more than 38,000 women and girls were killed in Gaza; the result of Israeli air bombardment and land military operations,” UN Women spokesperson Sofia Calltorp told a press briefing in Geneva.

“This includes over 22,000 women and 16,000 girls, amounting to an average of at least 47 women and girls killed every day.

“On top of a staggering death toll, nearly 11,000 women and girls in Gaza have sustained injuries so severe that they will live with lifelong disabilities,” Calltorp said.

She said the war had reshaped Palestinian families, with tens of thousands of Gaza households now headed by women who, having lost their husbands, must support their families “without income, without support, or access to essential services”.

Nearly a million women and girls have been repeatedly displaced during the genocide, while around 790,000 face crisis-level or catastrophic food insecurity.

Calltorp added that the US-Israeli war on Iran had further worsened conditions in Gaza, “as border crossing closures and humanitarian access constraints reduce access to life-saving support.”

According to Wafa News Agency, eight more Palestinians were killed in the past 24 hours, along with 24 injuries.

The number of fatalities since the ceasefire on 11 October has surged to 773, with more than 2,171 injuries reported. The bodies of 761 Palestinians have been retrieved over the same period.

Thousands of victims remain trapped under collapsed buildings or on the streets.
