In a statement issued on Saturday, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry denounced the incident, describing it as an unacceptable attack on international peacekeeping forces operating in Lebanon.
Cairo stressed its full rejection of any targeting of UNIFIL personnel and underscored the importance of enabling the mission to carry out its mandate to maintain security and stability in southern Lebanon.
Egypt also reaffirmed its support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and stability, while condemning any violations that threaten the country’s security.
The statement extended Egypt’s condolences to the government and people of France over the death of the peacekeeper and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
A French UN peacekeeper was killed and three others wounded in an attack in southern Lebanon on Saturday, with the UN attributing the incident to suspected “non-state actors,” possibly Hezbollah, which denied involvement, as Lebanese leaders pledged an investigation.
