Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stressed that current regional tensions should not divert attention from advancing the next phase of a US-backed ceasefire plan between Israel and Hamas to end the war in Gaza.

This came in separate phone calls on Wednesday with Palestinian Vice President Hussein Al-Sheikh, Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa, and Gaza High Representative Nikolay Mladenov to discuss the situation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank amid ongoing regional escalation, the foreign ministry spokesperson, Tamim Khalaf, stated.

FM Abdelatty underlined the need to complete all obligations of the ceasefire second phase, including deploying an international stabilization force, ensuring unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid, and launching early recovery and reconstruction programmes.

The discussions also addressed what the spokesman described as “serious developments” in the West Bank, citing continued Israeli violations and escalating military operations.

Abdelatty also decried repeated Israeli incursions into Palestinian cities and refugee camps, expansion of settlement activity in the occupied West Bank, and attacks by settlers on Muslim religious holy sites, warning that such actions are increasing tensions and undermining prospects for de-escalation and a return to political negotiations.

The latest contacts come amid increasing deadly Israeli violations of the truce and restrictions on the entry of aid to Gaza and a deadly crackdown by the army and settlers against civilians in the occupied West Bank.

Cairo has consistently stressed the need to preserve prospects for a political settlement based on a two-state solution, warning that continued escalation and unilateral measures on the ground could undermine chances of reviving negotiations.
