In a statement, the ministry said the releases were carried out by the Community Protection Sector after a thorough review of inmates’ files to ensure they meet the criteria set out in the presidential decree.

The move comes in implementation of Presidential Decree No. 142 of 2026, which grants pardons to eligible convicts as part of national celebrations marking Sinai Liberation Day.

The ministry added that the decision reflects ongoing efforts to apply a modern penal policy aimed at achieving justice while promoting the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates into society.

Egypt releases inmates through presidential pardons on major holidays per tradition.

The Sinai Liberation Day, which occurs on 25 April every year, commemorates the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Sinai Peninsula in 1982.
