Al-Ahram Weekly’s Alaa Abdel-Ghani is best in Africa in AIPS Opinion Column award

Al-Ahram Weekly writer Alaa Abdel-Ghani won first place in Africa for Best Opinion Column presented by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS), arguably the world’s most prestigious sports writing contest.

Abdel-Ghani was placed first on the continent for his column Thanks, but no thanks, published in the 19 September 2025 issue of Al-Ahram Weekly, in which he examined Egypt’s achievements during the 17-day Paris 2024 Olympics and how the country’s standards could be improved in the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

The awards were announced at a ceremony held in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Friday 17 April.

Abdel-Ghani previously won first place in 2023 for his column “Overseas aid,” published on 28 June 2022 which discussed the potential impact of hiring foreign staff to help improve football in Egypt.

He became the first Arab and African to win the Best Column award in the history of AIPS which this year had 1,987 submissions from 130 countries.
