Pakistan PM Sharif condemns attack on UAE, calls for US-Iran ceasefire to be upheld
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Tuesday that his country, which acts as a mediator between the US and Iran, condemned recent attacks on the UAE, calling for the fragile ceasefire to be upheld.
“Pakistan strongly condemns the missile and drone attacks on civilian infrastructure in the United Arab Emirates last night,” Shehbaz said on X, adding that he expresses full solidarity with the UAE.
“It is absolutely essential that the ceasefire be upheld and respected, to allow necessary diplomatic space for dialogue leading to enduring peace and stability in the region.”
Sharif's statements come amid an escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran in the Strait of Hormuz over the past 24 hours and a reported Iranian attack on an energy installation in Fujairah in the UAE.
Pakistan mediated the ceasefire between Washington and Tehran in early April, and talks between teams representing the two sides are ongoing in Islamabad.
