Egyptian Health Minister Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar met with French Ambassador to Cairo Éric Chevallier to discuss plans to expand treatment for Palestinian children with cancer, including the allocation of hospital beds under a new cooperation protocol expected to be signed in the coming weeks, the Ministry of Health said on Wednesday.

The meeting, attended by World Health Organization Representative in Egypt Dr Nima Abid, Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) Executive Director Amal Imam, representatives from Elevate, and officials from Gustave Roussy Egypt hospital, focused on strengthening cooperation to provide specialized oncology care for Palestinian children.

Abdel-Ghaffar said Egypt remains committed to providing medical and humanitarian support to Palestinians, stressing Cairo’s continued efforts in receiving the wounded and delivering comprehensive healthcare services.

He added that the ministry is expanding partnerships with international medical institutions to ensure Palestinian children have access to advanced cancer treatment protocols and specialized care.

Chevallier praised Egypt’s efforts in treating injured Palestinians and said France was ready to deepen cooperation with Egypt’s health ministry and support humanitarian initiatives targeting Palestinian children.

The talks also reviewed final arrangements for a cooperation agreement between Gustave Roussy Egypt Hospital and the French embassy that would allocate several beds for Palestinian children with cancer, with support from the ERC, ahead of the expected launch of patient admissions.

The meeting was attended by senior health ministry officials, representatives of the French embassy, the WHO, Elevate, and Gustave Roussy Hospital.

Egypt has expanded cooperation with France’s Gustave Roussy Institute in recent years as part of broader efforts to strengthen specialized cancer treatment and medical training in the country.

Gustave Roussy, one of Europe’s leading cancer centres based near Paris, entered the Egyptian market through Gustave Roussy International Egypt, a partnership aimed at transferring French expertise in cancer diagnosis, treatment, research, and medical education to Egypt and the wider region.

The cooperation has focused on developing advanced oncology services, particularly precision medicine, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, and pediatric oncology, while also supporting the training of Egyptian doctors, nurses, and other medical staff in accordance with international standards.

In 2024, Gustave Roussy International announced plans to establish and expand specialized oncology facilities in Egypt in cooperation with Egyptian healthcare institutions and private sector partners, positioning Cairo as a regional hub for cancer treatment in Africa and the Middle East.

Egyptian authorities have increasingly promoted partnerships with international medical institutions as part of efforts to modernize the healthcare sector, localize advanced treatment technologies, and reduce the need for patients to seek treatment abroad.
