Luxor’s Tiba Specialized Hospital has won Gold Status at the World Stroke Organization (WSO) Angels Awards for its stroke unit, Egypt’s Healthcare Authority (EHA) said on Thursday, marking a new international recognition for Egypt’s specialized neurological care services under the Universal Health Insurance System (UHIS).

The award reflects the hospital’s compliance with global standards for rapid diagnosis and emergency stroke intervention, including advanced treatment protocols aimed at reducing disability and mortality rates among stroke and brain hemorrhage patients.

EHA Chairman Ahmed El-Sobky said the Gold Status award highlighted the authority’s stroke-care system and its adherence to internationally recognized medical protocols for specialized neurological treatment.

“The award reflects the speed and precision of medical intervention within our healthcare facilities and reinforces confidence in the quality of specialized neurological services provided by the authority,” El-Sobky said.

The stroke unit, established in February 2025, includes 8 fully equipped beds and a multidisciplinary medical team comprising 15 neurologists and stroke specialists, as well as trained nurses, speech therapists, physiotherapists, neurosurgeons, and interventional neuroradiology consultants.

According to the authority, the unit has treated around 450 stroke and brain haemorrhage cases and administered clot-dissolving therapy (tPA) to nearly 150 patients within the internationally recognized “golden hour” timeframe. Doctors have also carried out several advanced interventional brain catheterization procedures for critical neurological cases.

The authority said the unit provides a comprehensive treatment pathway beginning with rapid diagnosis and emergency intervention, followed by intensive care, rehabilitation, and post-recovery follow-up.

El-Sobky added that Tiba Specialized Hospital has delivered more than 3.5 million medical and treatment services since operations began and performed over 100,000 surgeries and medical interventions, including thousands of major and highly specialized procedures serving patients across Luxor and Upper Egypt.

Egypt’s Universal Health Insurance System (UHIS) has delivered more than 105 million medical services under its first phase, while the government has allocated over EGP 115 billion for the second phase covering five additional governorates, as Cairo continues expanding nationwide healthcare coverage and specialized treatment services.

Egypt’s UHIS was established under Law No. 2 of 2018 as a mandatory, solidarity-based healthcare system aimed at achieving comprehensive health coverage for all citizens while separating financing, service provision, and regulatory oversight.

The system was first launched on a trial basis in Port Said in 2018. It then expanded to Luxor, Ismailia, South Sinai, Suez, and Aswan under Phase I, which was officially completed in July 2025.

The phase focused on upgrading hospitals and primary healthcare facilities, expanding digital health systems, and improving access to specialized and high-cost medical services.

According to official figures, UHIS has delivered more than 105 million medical services during its first phase, benefiting more than 6.2 million citizens. The government says public spending on the programme has exceeded EGP 48 billion so far.
