Aubrey Modiba scored the winner in the 37th minute with a free kick to give the hosts a valuable lead ahead of the return leg.

Sundowns controlled much of the match and prevented the Moroccan side from creating any real threat throughout the 90 minutes.

FAR were lucky not to concede further goals, particularly in the second half.

The visitors benefited from Sundowns’ occasional lapses in concentration and from goalkeeper Ahmed Reda Tagnaouti, who played a key role in keeping his side’s hopes alive.

The second leg will take place in the Moroccan capital on May 24.

Both sides are seeking a second African Champions League title.

FAR won the competition in 1985 under their former name, while Sundowns claimed their only title in 2016.
