Egypt’s foreign minister, Badr Abdelatty, called for an end to weapons flows to “illegal entities” in Sudan on Monday, as he met his Spanish counterpart, José Manuel Albares, in Madrid for talks on regional conflicts and bilateral ties.

During a joint press conference, Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s support for the Sudanese army and state institutions, while rejecting parallel entities in the country.

The war in Sudan, now in its fourth year, has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced millions and triggered one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises.

Albares said Spain was concerned by developments in Sudan and criticized the continued pursuit of a military solution by the warring sides.

The two ministers also discussed regional tensions, including the US-Israeli war on Iran.

Abdelatty said there was no military solution to the crisis and called for the swift resumption of direct negotiations between the United States and Iran.

He also condemned attacks targeting Gulf countries, Jordan, and Iraq, stressing the importance of maritime security and freedom of navigation.

Albares said Spain was coordinating with Egypt on efforts to address regional crises.

On Gaza, Abdelatty condemned attacks by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank and called for implementation of the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, brokered in October by Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and the US, which includes a full Israeli withdrawal.

Albares said Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) violated international law and described the mission as an act of humanitarian solidarity with Gaza.

He said aid entering the enclave remained insufficient and urged Israel to comply with international law.

The ministers also discussed Egyptian-Spanish relations, including economic cooperation and investment.

Abdelatty said Cairo wanted to attract more Spanish investment and praised Spanish companies, including the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), involved in projects linked to Egypt’s Vision 2030 development strategy.

Albares said Madrid was seeking to deepen cooperation with Egypt across multiple sectors.

The talks came during political consultations between the two countries on regional issues, bilateral relations, and ways of advancing their strategic partnership.
