El-Tayyeb made the remarks during a meeting on Tuesday at Al-Azhar headquarters in Cairo with Sudan’s ambassador to Egypt, Lieutenant General Imadeldin Mustafa Adawi, to discuss ways of strengthening Al-Azhar’s academic and cultural support for Sudanese students.
El-Tayyeb stressed the deep historical ties between Al-Azhar and Sudan, saying this relationship dates back centuries and is reflected in initiatives such as the “Al-Sennariya Riwaq” at Al-Azhar Mosque, established in the 16th century for Sudanese students studying at the institution.
He pointed out that around 10,000 Sudanese students are currently enrolled at Al-Azhar, including 888 on scholarships recipients.
He added that the institution grants 220 scholarships annually to Sudanese students to study at Al-Azhar University.
The grand imam reaffirmed Al-Azhar’s full solidarity with Sudan, highlighting the difficult humanitarian conditions it is currently facing.
He called on Sudanese people to prioritise unity, strengthen solidarity and reject division in support of the country’s stability and territorial cohesion.
For his part, the Sudanese ambassador praised the role of Al-Azhar in promoting authentic Islamic teachings and the principles of moderation.
He also commended Al-Azhar’s efforts in supporting Muslims worldwide and caring for Sudanese students, noting that Al-Azhar remains one of the most respected religious authorities for the Sudanese people.
The ambassador added that Sudan looks forward to establishing Al-Azhar-affiliated institutes in the country to serve Sudanese families seeking moderate religious education.
