The win lifted Pyramids to 54 points, two behind champions Zamalek, whose parallel defeat of Ceramica Cleopatra confirmed the title for the white-shirted Cairo club.

Pyramids dominated from the opening whistle at the Air Defence Stadium, with Mahmoud Zalaka spurning an early header before Ahmed Atef 'Kotta' forced a fine save from Hussein Taymour in the twelfth minute.

The opener arrived in the 23rd minute when Zalaka atoned for his earlier miss, powering a header from a left-flank cross past the goalkeeper to give the hosts a deserved lead.

Smouha levelled deep in first-half stoppage time when Hisham Adel Nabawy 'Balaha' drove a shot into the net from inside the penalty area, sending the teams to the break level at 1-1 and briefly unsettling Pyramids' title ambitions.

The second half resumed with Pyramids pressing relentlessly. Marwan Hamdy rattled the crossbar with a long-range effort in the 53rd minute before the decisive moment arrived on the hour:

Nasser Maher was brought down inside the area and converted the spot kick himself in the 68th minute, rolling the ball down the middle of the goal.

Pyramids controlled the closing stages without alarm, with substitute Fiston Mayele, on for Hamdy in the 81st minute, adding fresh energy up front but no further goals required.
