Egypt, Arab and Muslim countries denounce Somaliland’s purported illegal Jerusalem ‘embassy’

Egypt and a group of Arab and Muslim countries on Sunday described the decision by the so-called Somaliland region to establish a purported “embassy” in occupied Jerusalem as “a flagrant violation of international law and relevant international resolutions” and “a direct infringement on the legal and historical status of occupied Jerusalem.”

The foreign ministers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, Turkey, Pakistan, Indonesia, Djibouti, Somalia, Palestine, Oman, Sudan, Yemen, and Lebanon condemned the move “in the strongest terms.”

They reaffirmed their “categorical rejection” of any unilateral measures aimed at “entrenching an illegal reality in occupied Jerusalem” or conferring legitimacy on “entities or arrangements that contravene international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.”

In a joint statement, the ministers reiterated that East Jerusalem has been occupied Palestinian territory since 1967 and stressed that any measures intended to alter its legal and historical status are “null and void and without legal effect.”

They also emphasized their “full support” for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, while expressing “unequivocal rejection” of any unilateral measures that undermine the unity of Somali territory or infringe upon its sovereignty.

Egypt had already strongly condemned on Thursday the inauguration of what it described as an alleged “embassy” for the so-called “Republic of Somaliland” in occupied Jerusalem, calling the move illegal and a violation of international law and relevant international legitimacy resolutions.

The foreign ministry said the step constituted “a direct infringement on the legal and historical status of the occupied city of Jerusalem.”

Cairo reiterated its “complete rejection of any unilateral measures aimed at entrenching an illegal reality in occupied Jerusalem or granting legitimacy to any entities or arrangements that contravene the rules of international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.”

Egypt also reaffirmed that East Jerusalem “has been occupied Palestinian territory since 1967,” stressing that any attempts to alter its legal and historical status are “null and void and carry no legal effect.”

The issue comes amid escalating tensions following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland in late 2025 and subsequent efforts to deepen political and security ties with the breakaway region.

Earlier this year, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar visited Somaliland and held talks on expanding cooperation in trade, maritime security, technology, and defence, moves that Somalia and several regional states condemned as violations of Somali sovereignty.
