A large number of Egypt’s train drivers and conductors ended their nationwide strike on Monday evening, reported Ahram’s Arabic-language website, citing one of the strike’s leaders.

Hashim Rabeh said they had chosen to end the strike and resume working out of consideration for Egypt’s best interests.

Negotiations with the state’s Railway Authority have completely failed, according to Rabeh.

The strike began on Sunday after train drivers refused a 10 percent pay raise beginning in May, offered by Minister of Transportation Hatem Abdel-Latif at a meeting with the railway workers union on Saturday afternoon.
