After protesters in Sohag blocked the railway since early Friday, Cairo-Aswan train service resumes

A senior Egyptian railways official announces that Cairo-Aswan train service has resumed after a protest brought it to a 16-hour halt between Friday and Saturday.

"Thus far three trains have already started their trajectory to Cairo. We are also expecting trains coming from Cairo to arrive as scheduled," said the head of the infrastructure maintenance of the Aswan railway authority, Hussein El-Rashidi to state news agency MENA Saturday.

Hundreds of residents of El-Ballina village in the Upper Egyptian city of Sohag had blocked the railways to protest lack of police response to the kidnapping of one of the residents' daughters.

Since Egypt's uprising in January 2011, police have largely been absent from the street and, separately, citizens have on occasion blocked railways to protest a number of issues.
