One man was killed when passengers inside a pickup truck fired birdshot pellets at Prime Minister Hisham Qandil's convoy as it was passing through Giza's Nahda Square on Sunday night.
Taha Hassan, a street vendor who was passing near the site of the incident, was hit by the pickup truck during the incident, and transferred to 6 October Hospital in Dokki where he died.
Initial investigations revealed that the five arrested inside the pickup truck were on their way to a street fight in Cairo's Manial district when they encountered the prime minister’s convoy, reported Ahram’s Arabic website.
A security car accompanying Qandil tried to stop the pickup truck when it came in the way of the convoy. At that point, pellets were shot at the convoy.
In response, security officers shot several rounds in the air.
The victim's brother told Ahram’s Arabic website on Monday that he was hit by the pickup truck.
Another passerby was injured in the melee, in addition to a police officer and a conscript.
Egypt's Cabinet official spokesperson Alaa El-Hadidy denied on Monday there were any political motivations behind the gunfire directed at Qandil's convoy.
The five men are currently held in jail pending investigations into the incident.
