Tennis: Egypt duo exit Roland Garros tournament with pride

The only two Arab juniors in the Roland Garros tennis tournament, Mazen Osama and Sandra Samir, leave competition proud after losses in second round, hoping for better results next year

Egyptian youngster Mazen Osama lost in the second round of the Roland Garros tennis junior doubles partnering Denmark’s Simon Friis Soendergaard.

The duo ousted the sixth-seeded Filippo Baldi and Harry Bourchier 6-2, 1-6, and 10-7 but were defeated by Jurence Zosimo Mendoza (PHI) and Pak Long Yeung (HKG) 6-2, 6-1.

Osama was eliminated from the boys' singles competition in the first round, losing to eighth-seeded Borna Coric early this week.

In the girls contest, the only other participant from Arab countries, Sandra Samir, bid farewell to the competition after losing in the second round of both her singles and doubles matches Tuesday.

Samir was eliminated by Slovakia’s Kristina Schmiedlova, losing 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. The Slovakian defeated fourth-seeded Varvara Flink in the first round.

“Kristina serves are really big and [she] steps inside the court, unlike my first round opponent,” the 15-year-old Samir was quoted as saying on Sport360 after her loss.

“The past four months, I’ve been working on stepping inside the court myself and taking the ball early, but that’s not what I needed to do today.

"I had to be more patient and not be too aggressive. I shouldn’t have tried to speed up the ball with her because she blocks them. So by the time I realised I was playing with the wrong tactics, I had lost the first set.

“I recovered in the second set, but in the third, I started well but I got impatient again because my shoulder was starting to really hurt me. I’m not trying to give excuses, but I got treatment for my shoulder in the first round and today I woke up in a lot of pain.

“The doctor told me my diaphragm is strained and it’s affecting my whole right side.”

The African champion said she hopes to return next year and do better.
