Egypt midfielder Mohamed El-Neny suffered a shoulder injury in Basel's 1-1 draw with Grasshopper in the Swiss league on Sunday.
The 21-year-old was substituted 10 minutes before the break after tussling with a Grasshopper player for the ball.
"We cannot say anything precise; he injured his shoulder and will undergo further scans in the hospital," Basel coach Murat Yakin was quoted as saying by Basel's official website following the game.
El-Neny, who came through the youth ranks of Egypt's Arab Contractors, initially joined Basel on a short-term loan deal last January, helping them win the Swiss league for the fourth consecutive season.
He signed a four-year deal with Basel following the end of last season after establishing himself as a key player at the Swiss champions, thanks to his precise and efficient passes.
El-Neny is also a regular member of the squad of Egypt, who are aiming to end a 24-year wait for a World Cup appearance.
