Istislam, documentary by Mona El Naggar
"Istislam", a documentary by Mona El-Naggar, tackles issues related to submission, love, faith and politics. It will be screened in Cairo at Darb 1718 on Tuesday, 1 October.
With a title laden with irony, "Istislam" follows the lives of four young men and women learning about sex, marriage and gender roles during the year that the Muslim Brotherhood was in power.
Journalist and former reporter for The New York Times in Cairo, Mona El-Naggar began to explore filmmaking during the Egyptian revolution in 2011, when she started shooting video for the first time. After this initial experience with filmmaking, El-Naggar moved to the United States, where she obtained her Master's degree in documentary filmmaking from the New York University Journalism Institute.
"Istislam" won the Outstanding Documentary Award for the News and Documentary NYU class of 2013.
