One step forward, two steps back for Egypt’s doctors

Lack of agreement among doctors groups might set meeting back with Egypt’s PM Sharaf, causing Doctors Without Rights movement to consider a protest

The movement, Atebaa Bela Hokouk (Doctors Without Rights), said their members will protest in ‎front of ‎the cabinet building should the general assembly of Egypt’s Medical Syndicate fail to ‎meet with Prime Minister ‎Essam Sharaf.‎

The medical syndicate general assembly set a list of demands following their referendum. A committee was later formed to bring those demands to PM Sharaf in a meeting in the near future. ‎

Although the demands were agreed upon through the referendum, some members of affiliated syndicates expressed ‎some reservations, which exasperates Atebaa Bela Hokouk, making them weary of a possible postponement of the meeting due to an inability to agree on what demands to bring.‎

‎“We want the general assembly’s decisions to be fully respected,” Mona Mina, ‎spokeswoman of Atebaa Bela Hokouk, told Ahram Online.

‎“The general assembly’s list really reflects what the majority want.‎”

‎“We might rally in front of the cabinet if the meeting is postponed as a result of those who ‎object now.”‎

One of the committee’s demands is to allocate 15 per cent of the nation’s budget for developing hospitals and ‎medical services in ‎Egypt.‎
