Swiss coach Alain Geiger has left Egyptian Premier League side Masry by mutual consent.

The club opted to annul Geiger’s contract after the Egyptian uprising which toppled former president Hosni Mubarak left many clubs facing an uncertain future due to mounting financial problems.

Geiger led Masry in just two matches after being appointed as the club’s head coach in December on an 18-month contract, following the departure of Egyptian tactician Mokhtar Mokhtar.

Under his guidance, the Port Said-based club beat Maqassa 1-0 before slumping to a 2-0 loss to Ittihad El-Shorta in the Egyptian Premier League, which has been suspended since January due to security concerns.

Geiger’s assistant Tarek El-Sawy will be in charge of the team until the end of the season.

The Egyptjan Football Association (EFA) announced on Tuesday that the domestic league will be resumed on 13 April.

“We initially gave the players a four-day holiday but they will return to training immediately to get ready for the league resumption,” El-Sawy said.

Masry, who have never won Egypt’s premier domestic competition, lie seventh in the table with 20 points at the halfway stage of the season.
