On Friday 14 March, the Upper Egypt Association for Education and Development (AUEED) celebrates 25 years of enchanting voices at the Sacred Heart school in Heliopolis.
The choir was founded 25 years ago by Sister Celeste El-Khayat, who roamed the schools of Upper Egypt looking for talent, which she found in abundance.
The choir performs authentic songs, from Upper Egypt folk tunes to compositions by Said Darwish.
They have performed the poetry of Salah Jaheen and Fouad Haddad, and sung alongside contemporary poets Amin Haddad and Ahmed Haddad. They have also sung to the tunes of famous composers, such as Wagih Aziz and Hazem Chahine.
Hearing the choir is a rewarding experience. Their voices are as genuine and refreshing as their colourful folk attire.
